If you plan to travel with your pet internationally, you will be asked to present an International Health Certificate before embarking to your destination. This states that they are free of disease and infection and able to withstand the rigors of travel.
Most veterinarians can issue a certificate for domestic travel, but almost all health certificates for international travel must be completed by a specially trained veterinarian accredited through the USDA. Regulations vary considerably between countries for international pet travel, often including specific vaccinations or blood work. Many countries, including those in the European Union, have their own health certificates specific to each country. Even if you are traveling to a country with no health certificate requirement, you will then need the International Health Certificate (USDA-APHIS 7001).
